TerraPower is delivering the next generation of nuclear technology right now. Built for the changing grid, the Natrium® plant unlocks the firm, flexible, and carbon-free power we need.
The future of clean, baseload energy is under construction today. TerraPower is building America's first utility-scale advanced nuclear power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
With walk-away safety features and a decoupled design built on decades of operational research and digital modelling, the Natrium plant is engineered and tested to deliver a safer, more cost-effective and more flexible form of nuclear energy that can meet rapidly accelerating energy demand.
As the first commercial-scale advanced reactor design certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Natrium design has gone through a rigorous U.S. regulatory review and is built on decades of operating experience for sodium-cooled fast reactors.
Since our inception, TerraPower has been utilizing advanced computer modeling to design our reactor technologies. The Natrium reactor will be the first operational reactor designed from inception to commercialization in a completely digital environment. AI integration with our digital twin will play a major role in operational efficiency and create a replicable model for future deployment.
The Natrium technology offers the generation capacity of advanced nuclear with the flexibility of a battery.
The Natrium plant's design pairs a 345-megawatt sodium-cooled fast reactor with a gigawatt-scale, integrated energy storage system. With the separation of major structures into a Nuclear and Energy Island, the Natrium plant is designed to utilize significantly less construction material quantities, accelerating the delivery timeline.
By decoupling heat generation from power production, TerraPower can run the reactor at steady power while flexing electrical output. This makes the plant incredibly compatible with various grids and power output needs.
This interactive dashboard demonstrates the Natrium plant's unique ability to provide firm, flexible power to an evolving electric grid. Test how different shares of Natrium, solar, wind, hydro, and storage affect system cost, capacity buildout, and land requirements to see how advanced nuclear can anchor a high-renewables grid.
